Since the 1980s, Montague has provided full-size folding bicycles to various divisions of the US military.
In 1997, under a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Montague partnered with the US Marines to develop the Tactical Electric No Signature (TENS) Mountain Bike. For this project, Montague developed a new folding frame design called the X-Series, integrating the F.I.T. system into the frame design. The non-electric version of the TENS Mountain Bike, named The Paratrooper®, became available shortly thereafter.
The F.I.T.(Folding Integrated Technology) system was developed to allow a full-size, high-performance mountain bike to fold in half so that it could fit through the cargo door of a military aircraft with a paratrooper. When the soldier would hit the ground, he or she would have a tactical mountain bike to use as transportation, thereby bridging the gap between walking and deploying heavy military vehicles. This would not only aid in transportation but it would help to facilitate battlefield reporting as well.
The Paratrooper® is a full-size mountain bike that can traverse terrain silently at high speeds with no thermal or acoustic radar signature - key components when trying to avoid the enemy. The Paratrooper® offers up to 500 pounds of load hauling capability and it does not need diesel. It has enhanced off-body load bearing capabilities, a high level of maneuverability, and can compact to a portable size in less than 30 seconds. The bikes are indeed used in conjunction with Light Armored Vehicles and HMMWV’s as back up transportation and they also help to facilitate battlefield reporting.
It became clear that the folding technology found on bikes developed for the U.S. Military could be used in the civilian world as well, as these bikes began turning up in a host of other places where conventional non-folding bikes were not suitable or could not fit. By popular demand the military bikes made their way into civilian use.

The Paratrooper is a full size, 24 speed mountain bike designed to endure any terrain at high speed in silence with no heat signature. In addition to the high performance feature, the bike folds simply without the use of tools. By turning one quick lever, the Paratrooper folds in less than 30 seconds into 3' x 3' pack that can be dropped from a plane, strapped to the side of a LAV or thrown in the back of a boot.

The Montague Special Edition is very similar to the Paratrooper. It has two Disc brakes rather than just a front disc brake, and an obviously different colour. The fork upgrade results in a bike that is really more capable off-road than it’s less expensive brother the Paratrooper, but still has all the functionality and folding benefits of the Cammy Green bike that sees active service in war torn areas of the world.

The patented F.I.T. system developed by Montague engineers, and found on all their bikes, uses a system that does not cut any tubes in half. In fact, when looking at their bikes, it is not immediately clear how they fold, or even that they fold at all. They use their patented Concentrus system, which is a tube within a tube design that actually strengthens the frame by incorporating technology found on some high performance, dual suspension mountain bikes.
This technology was developed by Montague for military use and is covered under numerous patents worldwide.
No tools are required to fold and unfold Montague bicycles. Simply remove the front wheel and unlock one frame quick release. This can be done in a matter of seconds allowing the bike to be stored with ease in your car boot, boat, plane, cupboard, or anywhere else you stash your gear.
|
|
|
The foundation of all the Montague bikes is their award winning, patented folding frame design, Folding Integrated Technology. F.I.T. utilizes the seat tube as the pivot point frame, secured by a quick release lever, which allows the front frame to pivot around and fold neatly into the rear frame. Unlike other folding bikes on the market that sever frame tubes to accomplish folding, no tubes are cut or altered on their bikes, giving you rock solid performance.

Industry standard components mean maintenance is as simple and convenient as it would be with a conventional bike. Quickly folding down to a compact 3' X 3' X 1', without the use of tools, they can be conveniently stored in a car, boat, plane, office, or cupboard.
Montague bikes can be taken as stored luggage on commercial airplane flights, trains and buses.

|
All Montague bikes feature the CLIX Wheel Release System to ensure that removing and installing your front wheel is as easy as possbile. With CLIX, the front wheel clicks into place with the flick of a lever.
|
|
|
|
The CLIX bicycle wheel release system, winner of a Eurobike Design Award, is an innovative quick release system that makes taking your bikes front wheel on and off faster, easier and more intuitive.
The development of this new technology was inspired by the frequent misuse of the traditional quick release system. Bicycles with the CLIX QR from CLIX Systems, Inc. are revolutionizing the cycling industry from the casual rider to the performance racer.

As a Dahon Pro dealer all Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding parts and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. The bikes are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ .
We use the same procedure for the Montague bikes as we believe this is the only responsible way (and should be the only allowable way) to sell bicycles on the internet. In order that we can fit the Montague bikes back into the original boxes we have decided to fit the Suntour folding pedals below as standard at no extra cost, and we will also supply the original non-fold pedals in addition. If you wish to upgrade the folding pedals you can do so by using the link below to see our full range of folding or quick detachable pedals.

For those of you who wish to reduce the folded size still further, we offer folding pedals as an option, the pedals we supply are shown below but we have even more available on our e-commerce site using this link. Folding Pedals

We supply this pedal immediately below as standard on every Montague unless you choose to upgrade at extra cost, we also supply the standard non-folding ATB pedals in addition.

All Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding joints and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. After a brief test ride (mainly indoor) they are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ . All 26” wheel Dahon bikes arrive in the UK in boxes with the frame unfolded but the bike partially dismantled. We have taken the decision that in order to properly achieve our highest aim and that of the responsible manufacturers with whom we liase, that we therefore, properly prepare then fold the completed bike with only the handlebar removed, it is therefore necessary for us to repackage the bike accordingly on account of it’s larger size when assembled.
