Bromptons are the big favourite with commuters, extremely compact when folded, yet in 15 to 20 seconds transforms into a bike that you’ll be proud to ride, with excellent handling around town, or even a joy to ride on those longer trips, with a choice of two, three or six speed versions. In addition there are options of 12% reduced gearing for those particularly hilly regions.

The new range of Bromptons has introduced very many possibilities, from three styles of handlebar, lightweight Titanium rear swing arm and forks, Titanium seatposts and folding pedal axles, to a new 2 speed system. This has without doubt broadened the appeal, and younger riders feel more at home with the sport range, and the new colour introductions.

Although Brompton offer the A la Carte ordering system, which we are more than willing to operate for those that require it, the big downside is the delivery times which vary from 3 - 7 weeks according to the time of year and demand.

We have therefore decided to stock some standard models and some with Specifications and colours of our own choice, in order that we can supply bikes for immediate delivery.

Any standard model can be fitted with the Brompton front carrier system, and a seat pillar to suit your height

Except on the C - type, all standard models come with mudguards and folding pedals as well as the option (for an extra charge) of special colours

For each of the model types M, P , & S Brompton offer three variants.

A straight-forward no-frills model
A sophistacated version for more demanding use (suffix ‘PLUS’ )
A top end model with the full set of titanium parts (suffix ‘X’), on these, any of the three colours reserved for superlight frames can be chosen.


	We list below some of the details applicable to the various models in the Brompton range

1 - speed ( - 775gms) Light, simple to use and no clutter - for the purist

2 - speed (- 630gms). One gear for hills ans starting from a standstill, and one for cruising. Based on the unique Brompton derailleur system and their special rear free-hub, it is the best setup for lightness and portability. The direct drive, with near perfect chain alignment, is crisp and efficient. All that you need for riding around town, and fine for country rides too, if you don’t mind getting off on the steeper hills.

3 -speed The classic Sturmey-Archer hub, now with an alloy shell, provides three well- spaced gears. These are fully enclosed for reliability, and changing gear couldn’t be simpler. A popular choice for average everyday usage.

6 - speed ( +145gms) The combination of Sram’s very efficient hub-gears with Brompton’s own derailleur system gives six evenly spaced close-coupled ratios. Control with the two triggers is easy, and with it’s low transmission losses this multi- gear system is the right choice for touring and for riding in hilly areas.

Bike type

P - type (+ 175gms) The foam lower grips, well forward and about 880 mm from the ground, are angled for comfort on longer stretches of road, and you can deliver some real power to the pedals. Take care, however, as the brakes are on the upper bar, and you should only use thuis low position when the road is quite clear. The upper grips, at about 1033mm, provide a welcome contrast, and also give the best position for manoeuvering in traffic.

The P - type is a bit heavier than the M - type, and there’s less room for over-filling a front pannier, but it’s the best choice for longer distances and touring, or if you intend to do some fast riding.

Weight saving.

Whether you choose a minimalist Brompton, or add extra features and weight, it’s always good to keep the bike as light as possible. If you choose all the options available below, you lose almost a kilo, a striking saving when carrying or lifting a Brompton.

The main savings come from the use of high strength Titanium-alloy instead of steel. Though not cheap, titanium is a superb structural material, corrosion free, quite springy, and very lightweight.

Superlight frame option ( - 790gms)

On all Bromptons steel is used for the main-frame and handlebar stem. It’s the steel that gives rigidity to the vital link between handlbar and pedals, the keys to good handling. On a standard frame, the rear triangle and front forks are also steel.

On a superlight frame, these two above mentioned parts are titanium, with the extra springiness of titanium a bonus. Still further weight is saved through having an alloy headset and titanium mudguard stays. Also, as the idea is to minimise what you carry, there is no provision for a pump.

Superlight colours: the best complement for raw titanium is one of the three unusual matt colours reserved for superlight frames, Flamingo, Kew green, or Tempest. You can however choose one of the other Brompton colours.


	Titanium seat-post ( - 100gms) The surface treatment on this part gives a deep blue hue, which softens with use. Any of the three Brompton seat pillars is available in Titanium. (for the longer pillars the weight saving is more, - around 225gms

		Titanium folding pedal axle (- 25gms ) A small saving, we know, but still worthwhile Also it makes the pedals better balanced.

Saddle height and position

With the standard seat pillar. a PU saddle can be up to 965mm from the ground, and a rail saddle (such as Vitesse or Brooks) up to 995mm high. If your inside leg measurement is more than 32” (or 33” with a rail saddle), you almost certainly need a longer seat piller. The telescopic pillar is best for an inside leg more than 35” or for a taller rider wishing to minimise the height of the folded bike. The weights are for steel pillars.

60mm longer than the standard seat pillar, with the saddle corrrespondingly higher when folded


	Saddle Adaptor pin (+125gms) This brings the saddle forward, and, if fitted pointing down, allows the smallest folded bike-size. pointing up, it raises the saddle 30mm

		Mudguards and Rack

Telescopic Seat Pillar (b) (+295gms)

Allows a saddle height up to 175mm higher than normal, yet when lowered the saddle projects only 20mm from the folded package.

Version R rear rack and mudguards. (+370gms)

Whether or not you have front luggage, it’s handy to have a rear carrier always on the bike. The strong die-cast aluminium rack comes complete with shock cords to tie things on, and can take heavy loads, (but anythuing above 5kgs can begin to affect handling).

With a rear rack you can also fit “eazy- wheels” for pushing the folded bike around rather than carrying it.

	P6R - X Not strictly speaking ‘superlight’, as this model has near enough everything, yet the weight is kept manageable, thanks to all the Titanium parts. With 6 gears, Kevlar reflex tyres, Vitesse fizik saddle, rear rack, dual position bars and the superbe Son dynamo ststem, this is the top Brompton, the best one for touring or high performance everyday riding

Hub - dynamo lighting (+395 gms)

Expensive, but lovely. The Son hub for small wheels is beautifully engineered and highly efficient, and you can expect years of reliable service. Control is via a switch on the front lamp, the lights are the same as for the tyre-driven system.

Front carrier system

The Brompton system is a very convenient method for carrying luggage on the bike, and it only takes a single finger press to attach or release it. The load is attached direct to the bike frame, so has little effect on the steering. The system is ideal if you often need to take luggage or shopping with you.

Simply, there is a tapered block and a special frame which latches onto it. We stock a choice of three soft-luggage options which fit over the frame.

	For those of you who prefer a more personal service, we are always very happy to discuss the advantages of the various models to help quide you towards a bike that is suitable for your requirements and within your budget. All Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding joints and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. After a brief test ride (mainly indoor) they are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ . All 26” wheel Dahon bikes arrive in the UK in boxes with the frame unfolded but the bike partially dismantled. We have taken the decision that in order to properly achieve our highest aim and that of the responsible manufacturers with whom we liase, that we therefore, properly prepare then fold the completed bike with only the handlebar removed, it is therefore necessary for us to repackage the bike accordingly on account of it’s larger size when assembled.
