Airnimal Black Rhino 2008

The Black Rhino is certainly as solid as its 'namesake' and with its mixture of top end components it oozes refinement. No longer are those distant trails just sunlit dreams, indulge your fantasies with a Black Rhino.  Black Rhino is now fitted as standard with a Rohloff 14 speed hub gear which is a beautiful piece of engineering that is equivalent to a 24/27 speed derailleur system.

The Rhino comes in one size, and can fit riders from 160cms (5’3”) to 190cms (6’3”). However, depending on riding style and body proportions, larger riders can be accommodated.

The Rhino has two levels of fold. The first level, car boot/commute/fast fold can be done in under 45 seconds. If required, for protection or regulations, the folded bike can be folded into its dedicated shoulder bag in a further 60 seconds. The second level, fitting the bike into a suitcase for airline or other travel, can be done in around 5 minutes. That is for a bike without mudguards or racks (both of which will fit into the case) and without packing any other luggage or accessories.

When other shock manufacturers were bouncing around with coils and air/oil in the early days of rear suspended mountain bikes, Cane Creek stood behind their original air-driven shock. They knew it was ideal for bicycle suspension- low weight, precise tunability, and low maintenance durability.

Based on the proven technology and design qualities of their well-respected AD series of air shocks, the Cloud Nine remains air sprung and air damped. Like the AD shocks, the Cloud Nine uses speed sensitive valving to manipulate the air pressure and flow, which results in progressive compression and rebound damping.

The Cloud Nine boasts improved technological features in the areas of adjustment, performance, and maintenance.

  • Compression and Rebound Adjustment: The compression and rebound adjustment knobs are easily accessible from the side of the shock, allowing for quicker "on the fly" adjustment.
  • The adjusters are also indexed for positive adjustment feedback and more precise adjustment control.
  • There is also a wider range of adjustment control (than with the AD design) with both the compression and rebound adjustment.
  • A newly designed Rapid Compression Adjuster (RCA)® enables the user to take the compression damping to its firmest position with the push of a button.
  • Pressing the button will have the same effect as turning the compression adjuster all the way in, yielding a more progressive shock. Pressing it again will return the compression setting to its previous position.
  • Performance/Plushness: Several design features lead to smooth, stiction free travel.
  • An improved negative spring design allows for more supple initial travel and small bump responsiveness.
  • An exceptionally smooth piston shaft that is manufactured to a low microfinish surface, and finished with a hard coat anodization yields very low seal friction (stiction).
  • A bronze impregnated Teflon® glide ring aids in providing smooth travel over the course of the Cloud Nine's life.
  • Trouble Free Maintenance: In keeping with the Cane Creek tradition of having the most easily maintainable rear shocks on the market, we have designed the Cloud Nine to be even simpler to service and maintain.
  • There are no special tools required to disassemble the Cloud Nine.
  • All dynamic o-rings (seals) can be accessed with the use of a 1.5mm hex wrench.
Seal replacement on a Cloud Nine rear shock can be performed literally in minutes.

Easy to fold? In a word, yes!  For the first fold, everything is by quick release. The front wheel and seat post are removed and the seat tower and main folded around pivots. The suitcase fold requires the above plus back wheel and pedal removal (you can purchase as an extra some very neat quick release pedals) and finally the handlebar is removed from its stem by undoing two allen key bolts. For taller riders it might be necessary to remove the steerer tube extender and stem also – again 2 bolts.

The Rhino makes an agile off-road bike and is perfect for travelling to and exploring distant trails. It is also ideal for heavy duty touring, particularly when mixed and/or difficult surfaces are anticipated.

Wheel Size The 20”, ISO 406 wheel is commonly used for BMX bikes because its small size makes for agile handling and an exceptionally strong wheel. These characteristics combined with the ability to fit a 2” knobbly without increasing the folded size beyond airline limitations make an ideal wheel for the Rhino.

Tyre/Rim Availability The ISO 406 size is very widely used for BMX and for recumbents. Consequently, there is a wide range of good quality tyres ranging from the widest knobbly to narrow high performance slicks.

Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 has been developed for both pros and performance oriented hobby cyclists who can appreciate it because of its reliability, perfect single gear ratios, wide range of gears, low maintenance and easy operation; its weight and efficiency are ideal even for pro racing.

The sealed gearbox ensures reliability and durability even under the toughest conditions. The even increments of 13.6% from gear to gear make it possible to always ride at the performance peak. The overall range makes sure that you have the right gear in every situation. Pure fun is guaranteed.

The SPEEDHUB 500/14 is operated by a twist shifter which shifts simply by pulling separate cables up or down. The indexing of the shifting lies not in the shifter as with common designs, but inside the hub. There is no wear on the indexing system nor need to adjust it.

The possibilities of an alternative gear system had been thought over by Rohloff for a long time. All advantages of the derailleur system (low weight, high working efficiency, large range of gears, etc.) were retained whereas the known disadvantages (high maintenance, low level of dirt resistance, short wear, etc.) were excluded.

As a result of plenty of years investigation and designing, the high performance gearhub with 14 gears was ready for testing at the end of 1996. After intensive research and development, the production could start in 1999. Since then, thousands of gear hubs have left the production line every year and at the end of 2002, there were approx. 20,000 SPEEDHUB 500/14´s in use worldwide. Needless to say there have been very many more since then endorsing the success and impact that this hub has made at the high end of the bicycle market.

Professional and hobby riders know and like the substantial properties: High reliability, easy use, optimal gear increases, wide range of gears, carefree easy use, quick gear shifting, low weight and high working efficiency. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 leaves no riders' wish unfulfilled.

Close to the technology of the car industry, the fully encapsulated gear mechanism runs within an oil bath to guarantee a long life for the hub even under extreme riding conditions.

The engagement of the gears is controlled within the hub itself and so it runs adjustment and maintenance free. The even gear increases of 13.6% ensure that the rider can always ride to his/her optimum performance. The large overall range of gears (526%) ensures that there is always the correct gear available for every type of riding situation. Pure cycling fun is guaranteed!

Important Customer Information

For those of you who prefer a more personal service, we are always very happy to discuss the advantages of the various models to help quide you towards a bike that is suitable for your requirements and within your budget.  We have a passion for folding bikes and their place in todays society for both the commuter and leisure cyclist alike. Please ring us if you need help or advice on 01666 822330

All Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding joints and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. After a brief test ride (mainly indoor) they are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ .  All 26” wheel Dahon bikes arrive in the UK in boxes with the frame unfolded but the bike partially dismantled. We have taken the decision that in order to properly achieve our highest aim and that of the responsible manufacturers with whom we liase, that we therefore, properly prepare then fold the completed bike with only the handlebar removed, it is therefore necessary for us to repackage the bike accordingly on account of it’s larger size when assembled.
